The new year is a chance for renewal and growth. It can ignite feelings of hope, and change, or it can remind you to pay more attention to the small joys that you already have.
Maybe you’re entering this new year with the intention of bettering your skincare routine. Or perhaps you’ve kicked off the new year declaring, “New year, new me!” Besides, you’re never too old to reinvent yourself.
Of course, you don’t need to wait for a new year to happen in order to take control of your life, but it can be a great time to implement some of the wonderful things you’ve been wanting to try, especially when it comes to skincare and makeup!
This new year, if you’re looking to try some classy, and trendy makeup styles for older women, you’ve come to the right place.
The Trends
Trends come and go, but it can be especially fun to watch them come back around! Let’s review the trends that seem to be sweeping the makeup market in 2021.
- Getting Glossy: In 2020, we saw the rise of dewey makeup. Women of all ages were striving to get a shiny, youthful, hydrated looking vibrancy to their skin. We primarily saw this when it came to highlighting the cheekbones, and the nose, but in 2021, we’re taking it a step further. While still embracing the dewy look, it looks like glossy lips, and glossy eyelids are becoming quite popular as well. If glossy eyelids sound a bit too messy for you, fear not. You can easily achieve the dewy look simply by moisturizing frequently, and topping it off with a nice, light highlight!
Pro tip: highlighting the cheekbones, the tip of the nose, and below the brow bone will help lift your face and give you a nice, gentle contour.
- “Twiggy Eyes”: Style icon Twiggy might’ve made a name for herself in the ’60s, but we’re still celebrating her bold look today. Using a combination of eyeliner and eyeshadow, she was able to overly accentuate her large eyes to deliver a rather jaw-dropping look. If you’re not inclined to try eyeliner in that fashion, no worries! You can actually just use eyeshadow to create the shape you want and accentuate the beautiful parts of your eyes that make them special.
- A 90’s Flare: If you’re keen on a softer look for face makeup, you’re in luck. All those soft pinks we saw in the 90’s are back, and better than ever. Don’t worry about loading on a heavy blush or bronzer, with this trend – the more natural, the better. If you have a nice light finishing powder, and a complimentary rosy blush, you’re all set!
- Still Keeping It Natural: Trying new or returning makeup trends on mature skin can be intimidating, and you might think nearly impossible. But as we know, beauty knows no bounds, and age is not a reflection of what makeup looks you “should” or “should not” try. If you’re worried about your makeup looking natural, make sure to prepare the skin properly before applying, and you should be good to go. Then, when applying the makeup itself, just remember: less is more!
Makeup Myths:
Does bottom eyeliner make you look older?
Bottom eyeliner will not automatically make you look older. However, your water line will change as you age, and therefore will not be the best place to apply bottom eyeliner to. If you still want to accentuate the eye with a bit of color, take an eyeshadow color that is complementary to your eye color, and with a thin brush, sweep it gently right underneath your bottom eyelashes.
Does powder foundation make you look older?
Powder foundation also does not necessarily make you look older – so long as you have the correct powder. Many powder foundations can stick to dry patches of the skin, or fail to reach smaller creases. If you have oily or a combination skin type, powder foundation should work just fine. Do certain lip colors make you look younger?
If you’re looking to create a fuller, plumper lip appearance, opting for pinks, corals, reds, and neutral lipsticks will highlight the beautiful presence of the lips themselves without drawing too much attention to surrounding fine lines or wrinkles.
